Alicia Keys: ‘We Are Here’ Review

RnB soul pianist, singer, and mom-to-be (twice-over!) Alicia Keys released last year a music video for her single “We Are Here” and performed the single for the first time on the The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The single is a unifying anthem addressing all the negative happenings in the world right now, from Baghdad, to Gaza, to Israel, to Nigeria, to the Chinatowns and Harlems of the world.

Keys’ inspiration for “We Are Here” came from a simple question someone put forth. She told, “The day I wrote this song, I was sitting in a circle of people of all ages and we were asked, ‘Why are you here? Why am I here??’ This really hit me on a deep level. I realized no one had ever asked me that question before. As I prepare to give birth to a new child, I can’t help and think about the world I’m bringing my baby into. No matter where we come from, when we see the state of the world today, we can all feel the growing frustration and desire to make a difference. And we all have a voice—we just need to know how to make it heard.”

In the music video Keys, with a baby bump visible under her red sweatshirt that has the words “Revolution” emblazoned in white on the front, sits down to a Yamaha electric piano on a New York City rooftop with the nighttime skyline as her backdrop. Though dressed comfy-cozy, she is as elegant as ever, sporting a cropped do on the sides of her head, while maintaining her Cleopatra-esque beaded corn rows along the top of her head down to her shoulders. She opens with the chorus, which is an answer to the question that hit her on deep level, “We are here / We are here for all of us / We are here for all us / That’s why we are here, why we are here / We are here.”  The strength of the piano solidly pounding away is matched by Keys’ confident delivery to one of life’s unanswerable questions, her powerful voice setting the night air on fire.

Positively glowing with inspiration, Keys cries out her message of the meaning of life into the night. “Let’s talk about our part / My heart touch your heart / Let’s talk about, let’s talk about living / Had enough of dying, not what we all about / Let’s do more giving / Do more forgiving, yeah / Our souls were brought together so that we could love each other / Sister,” she sings as the camera circles around her and her piano. The words “Freedom” and “Love” are written in white all over the piano, on top of which lies a black booklet with the words “War is Over!” printed on the cover. The music video leaves you with a hopeful determination to make a difference, to be here for each other, to make your voice heard to the world.
