Actress Anna Kendrick released “A Summer In Ohio,” the first of ten songs that Kendrick will sing for the soundtrack of her new film, The Last Five Years, which is debuting today. The Richard LaGravenese-directed film is an adaptation of Jason Robert Brown‘s 2002 Off-Broadway musical of the same name. Kendrick plays the role of Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress who starts the film out by discovering a letter from her soon-to-be ex-husband Jamie (played by Jeremy Jordan). The film details the couple’s five years of marriage, in chronological order from Jamie’s point of view and in reverse chronological order from Cathy’s.
In “A Summer In Ohio,” Kendrick’s character sings about her experiences working in Ohio away from her husband. Suffice it to say that Kendrick’s character would vastly prefer being anywhere but Ohio. This is not Kendrick’s first time exploring the realm of musical theatre. Just last year, Anna starred as Cinderella in Rob Marshall‘s adaptation of the Broadway classic Into The Woods. Kendrick was heavily featured on the film’s soundtrack, which reached the top 10 on the Billboard 200.
This year Kendrick will also be reprising her role as Becca Mitchell in Pitch Perfect 2, the sequel to her breakout role in the hugely successful 2012 Pitch Perfect. In the film, Kendrick’s character takes the lead of the Barden Bella’s, an all female a Cappella club, with her innovative musical arrangements. Kendrick was again featured heavily on the film’s soundtrack, most notably for her covers of Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” and Simple Mind’s “Don’t You (Forget About Me).” In previews for Pitch Perfect 2, Kendrick and her fellow actresses have been seen performing a Cappella covers of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” and Beyoncé’s “Run The World (Girls).”
Her role in Pitch Perfect also earned Kendrick her first single to chart on the Billboard charts, when her contribution to the soundtrack, “Cups (When I’m Gone),” peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100. In fact, the song did so well that Kendrick recorded a music video for the number, and was featured as a collaboration on Pitch Perfect 2’s first trailer. Not a bad chart spot for an actress.
