Neon Jungle is a British all-girl group who just released their debut album Welcome to the Jungle a few days ago, a testament to girl-power pop-ballads. Banks, once labelled as a “insecure flower with a dark, sexy underside,” is a rising R&B singer, also from London. The two acts intersect at Banks’s song ‘Waiting Game’, and Banks’s surprised frustration at Neon Jungle for covering the song without asking permission. Neon Jungle released their album on July 28th, including their cover of ‘Waiting Game’ in the track list, although they posted a video of the cover a few months back in February. Today Banks posted a lengthy tirade on her Facebook page expressing her surprise and frustration about the unauthorized Neon Jungle cover, writing:
“People keep asking why I let Neon Jungle put my song ‘Waiting Game’ on their album when my album has yet to come out. The answer is I was never asked. I was as shocked as you to see this song made up of my own heartbeats on their album. A song that was born from my real life, my real heartache, my real fingertips when I was at one of the most confusing times in my life.
How strange it is to see it used on someone else’s album before it even comes out on mine.It makes me feel very uncomfortable. Like my own thoughts were stolen from me and sold as someone elses’. I am a new artist and new to this business and I am told it is legal. But it feels really icky. I guess I can only hope Waiting Game means as much to Neon Jungle as it did to me when I wrote it.”
Since ‘Waiting Game’ has been one of the highlights of Banks’s career thus far (It was featured in a Victoria‘s Secret advertisement in 2013), its understandable why she feels “icky” about not being approached about Neon Jungle’s reproduction. It’s also worth noting that she planned to release ‘Waiting Game’ on her own album, out in September, and Neon Jungle almost beat her to the punch by releasing their cover version first. What’s more, Neon Jungle’s new album contains a cover of Hozier’s ‘Take Me To Church’, which appears to be properly credited.
Banks will tour North America supporting The Weeknd. She’ll release her debut EP GODDESS via Harvest Records on September 9th (September 8th in the UK). We’ll leave it to you to compare the two videos and share your thoughts. Watch Neon Jungle’s cover here, and BANKS’s original version here.
