Singer, actress, and director Barbra Streisand has made U.S. chart history today by becoming the first artist to achieve Number One albums in every single decade for the last sixty years. Her latest release, Partners, sold 196,000 copies after which it topped Billboard’s charts. People, the seventy-two year old’s first Number One album, soared to the top in October of 1964, nearly fifty years ago. She broke a record for women as well – her latest hit has made her the only female singer (so far) to have ten Number One albums in the U.S. and its opening revenue sum holds the position as the largest sales week for a female artist in 2014, and is Streisand’s biggest sales frame since Christmas week of 1997.
Currently, Streisand holds the Number Four slot in the list of all time album chart toppers in the U.S., behind The Beatles, who take the lead with nineteen Number Ones. Number Two is Jay Z with thirteen Number Ones, and in the third place slot is Bruce Springsteen with eleven best selling albums. Streisand is actually tied with Elvis Presley for fourth place, and ironically, she features him on Partners, an album that is a classic collection of songs, featuring fellow star artists such as Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel (with whom Streisand performs “New York State of Mind”), Michael Buble, Blake Shelton, and Josh Groban. She outsold country star singer Tina McGraw and hip hop artist Chris Brown to claim her spot.
In the 1970’s, her albums The Way We Were (released in 1974) along with two other releases in that decade reached the top of the U.S. charts. In the 1980’s, two records of hers made up there, including Guilty which led to a hit title track performed by Barry Gibb, and “Woman In Love,” which became a U.S. Number One single. In the 1990’s she again had two Number One albums, and as for the 2000’s, Love Is The Answer pinnacled in 2009, and was her last hit to top the charts before Partners took over. Much of the album’s success is attributed to Streisand’s publicity strategy during its first week out. In addition to the all-star guest list the album features, it was also available for a very reasonable price of $7.99 on Amazon MP3 and iTunes.
