Beats Music Seeking Out Swift and Other Artists

It’s quite obvious that Taylor Swift is undoubtedly one of the world’s most popular artists, not only has she won seven Grammys, sixteen American Music Awards, thirty-four Billboard Music Awards, and several other honors, but she also is the only artist to have three albums sell over a million copies during their first week of release.  With such a large fan base, it’s no wonder that Apple is trying so hard to obtain exclusive rights to her fourth studio album 1989.  Apple acquired Beats Music in May 2014 and since then has been revamping the service with the help of Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor, Dr. Dre, and record and film producer, Jimmy Iovine.  What exactly the revamp entails is still unknown, as is the exact release date, but if it were up to Apple, their new streaming service would include several high profile musicians.  In a recent interview with the New York Times, Kayne West revealed that Apple had offered him one million dollars to join forces with new Beats Music.  According to a report by Bloomberg, aside from Swift and West, Apple has reached out to over a dozen other artists, hoping that by being able to offer content that can be found nowhere else, they’ll have a foot ahead in the streaming war.  Or at least have a foot in the door.

With Swift’s shunning of Spotify last year and last month’s celebrity studded re-launch of Jay-Z’s Tidal, it’s clear that musicians want more than what they’re being paid through “freemium” streaming services; and if the artists and their major record labels have it their way, Spotify along with other free tiered streaming services will soon be seeing their last days.  Whether Swift or Florence and the Machine will allow Apple to offer its subscribers exclusive content, including Florence and the Machine’s highly-anticipated third studio album How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, is still unknown.  Many of today’s biggest artists have already not only joined Tidal but are stockholders in the company as well.  While Tidal is still in its infant stage and only has around 600,000 customers, it is backed by Madonna, Daft Punk, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Jack White, and more, making it a challenge for Apple to find their own musician heavyweights.  Beats, according to an anonymous insider, will have a monthly subscription for ten dollars and a family plan for fifteen dollars per month.  Tidal, on the other hand, offers a standard subscription for ten dollars per month and a premium one for twenty dollars.
