We’re just days away from the Billboard Music Awards, and the show opener was just announced. Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie, hot off their new single, “Me!” will be the headliners and will no doubt be incredible judging from their music video.
Kelly Clarkson returns as the host for the show this year. This is her second time, with the first hosting gig in 2018. That year marked a great performance from the beloved singer as she sang a medley of 2018 nominees’ songs with a background choir.
There are plenty of good performances slated for this year. In addition to Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie, viewers can expect all of our their favorites. Kelly Clarkson will perform her new single. BTS will take the stage, and bring all of the pandamonium their group entails. Ciara, Panic at the Disco, Paula Abdul, Halsey, Mariah Carey, Tori Kelly, Dan + Shay, Jonas Brothers, Khalid are also slated to perform.
Debuts and Triumphant Returns
A powerhouse of talent is on hand this year. Fans believe Ariana Grande recently teased that she was coming to the Billboard Music Awards by writing the show’s initials on a prop in a recent show. Even if she doesn’t perform, viewers won’t be disappointed.
Ciara will share “Thinkin Bout You” in a worldwide debut on the show. Her seventh studio album, Beauty Marks, is set for release May 10.
BTS and Halsey will perform “Boy with Luv,” for the show. The artists all recently appeared on Saturday Night Live; Halsey as host and musical guest, and BTS as musical guest for host Emma Stone’s episode. “Boy with Luv”’s video just arrived and will no doubt make fans hyped for the live television debut of the song. Halsey will also perform solo with “Without Me.”
Mariah Carey will receive the Icon Award, and will do a medley of her biggest hits, including the single “Straight Up” which turns 30 this year.
Madonna hasn’t performed at the show since 2016, but she’ll be on stage with Latin singer Maluma to perform “Medellin,” The single comes from her upcoming album, Madame X.
Panic! at the Disco has never performed at the BBMA, so that should be a treat, especially as Brendon Urie is appearing with Taylor Swift.
The Jonas Brothers haven’t done a television performance in 10 years (feel old yet?) but thanks to their recent reunion, fans will be able to hear their new single “Sucker” during the show.
Sam Smith was announced to perform with Normani, but had to pull out as he recovers from vocal cord surgery.
As for the nominations, it’s clear we’re all living in a Cardi B World: she’s racked up 21 nominations, the most of any performer this year. Drake and Post Malone are close behind with 17 nominations each. Lady Gaga received nominations for her work on A Star is Born, and is also nominated separately.
