It has just been announced that Cobra Starship will be returning with fewer members than before. Yesterday, on the band’s blog, fans discovered a surprising farewell regarding two of their members. “It is with heavy hearts that today we announce the departure of Ryland and Alex from Cobra Starship.” Cobra Starship have recently joined Pete Wentz’s expansion of the Decaydance label, DCD2, and are rumoured to have been in the studio since April. The band released their comeback single, “Never Been In Love,” with Swedish duo Icona Pop this past August.
Cobra Starship have held the same lineup since the departure of Elisa Schwartz in 2007, making the loss of Ryland Blackinton (lead guitar) and Alex Suarez (bass guitar) perhaps the first major change the band has faced. On their blog, the group was quick to clarify that this is not the end of Cobra Starship. Gabe Saporta expressed his views on the matter. “Although we were bummed when they first told us, Nate (Novarro), Victoria (Asher), and I love Cobras too much to not move forward. Not only because of what this band means to us, but also because of what Cobra stands for: To never give up, to never say die.”
Saporta even teased fans about who would be taking their bassist’s place. “Here’s your hint as to who he is: he was in a band that toured with Cobras. Take your best guess—the polls are now open!” Their identity of Cobra Starship’s new member will be revealed later this week.
Blackinton and Suarez also left a message for their grieving fans. “We’re excited to start a new chapter in our lives in production and song writing. Who knows? Maybe we’ll finally even fulfill our dream of competing in American Ninja Warrior.” He continued on a more serious note. “When the two if us met in high school, all we wanted to do is play music. Thank you for making that possible.” Both Blackinton and Suarez feature cameos in Cobra Starship’s “Never Been In Love” music video which premiered today, and are pictured waving goodbyes to the band.
