Cop Was Standing In Pouring Rain For The Most Adorable Reason

When one couple was driving near their home on a stormy day, they were taken aback by what they saw on the road. There, standing in the middle of the road, was a police officer. You’ll be shocked when you find out why the officer willingly stood around in the pouring rain.

Carolyn B. R. Hammett and her husband were driving in their car around their home in Greenbelt, Maryland. It was a pretty uneventful day except for the fact that it was storming pretty badly.

It was a particularly stormy afternoon and the rain was continuing to pour down. Due to this, Hammett was driving more carefully than usual. That’s when she saw something that shocked her!

18. Unusual

As the couple was driving down the road, they saw the most unusual thing. There, standing in the middle of the road, was a police officer. She was completely soaked!

17. Soaking Wet

The police officer was absolutely soaking wet and she didn’t even have an umbrella. Regardless, she stood in the middle of the road with a huge smile on her face. The Hammett’s were quite confused so they decided to take a closer look…

16. Confused

Hammett was pretty confused as to why the officer was just standing there in the pouring rain. She thought that maybe the road had flooded up ahead and that the officer was there to warn drivers. So the Hammett’s stepped out of the car to see what was going on. That’s when they saw what the woman was actually doing there!

15. Stepping Out

As we got closer, we realized that she was standing over something,” Hammett told The Dodo. As Hammett and her husband got closer they saw why the officer was standing there. It was pretty unexpected. You’ll never guess what the woman was protecting!

14. Snapping Turtle

The police officer was standing over a turtle! It seems that the snapping turtle had unwisely chosen to take a break in the middle of the road. Since it was raining so badly that day, it would have been easy for someone to accidentally run him over. Thankfully the police officer saved the day by doing this amazing thing…

13. Good Deed

Instead of leaving the turtle to fend for its life on its own, the police officer decided to help out. So that’s where the Hammett’s found her – standing guard over a turtle in the pouring rain! What happened next is even more amazing…

12. Unbelievable

I couldn’t believe that she was standing there guarding that turtle in all that rain,” Hammett said. “Not many people would do that, regardless of their occupation. She was serving and protecting in every sense of the word.” So Hammett and her husband pulled the car over and decided to help out the officer. Here’s what they did…

11. Helping Out

They brought her an umbrella and began to shield her from the rain. When they spoke to her they soon found out how she came to discover the turtle. You’re probably wondering why didn’t she just picked it up and take to the side of the road. Well, the woman had her reasons as she later explained…

10. Discovery

It seems that the officer was driving back from a ceremony that she had just attended. It was during that time that she was alerted to the turtle and his unfortunate situation. She was also told something else very important that you need to know…

9. Important Information

As the officer was being alerted to the situation, she was also told that it was dangerous to handle snapping turtles with your bare hands. So the officer called animal control for help, but they hadn’t been able to come through yet. While waiting around, Hammett had a brilliant idea that ended up saving the animal’s life! You won’t believe what she did…

8. Waiting Around

So the officer stood around in the rain, waiting for animal control to show up. The Hammett’s decided that instead of waiting for animal control they would step in and help. So they headed home to get two shovels. Curious to see what happened next? It will blow you away!

7. Shoveling

Hammett and her husband then bought the shovels back over to where the snapping turtle was. They used the shovels to lift up the turtle and move him off the road. It was a successful move! And then…

6. Rescued

Finally, the turtle was off the main road and placed in an area where he wouldn’t have to worry about being run over. Even though the turtle was pretty grateful, it was the police officer who showed the greatest thanks to the Hammett’s.

5. Thankful

The police officer was so thankful to the Hammett’s for helping out. They didn’t have to go out of their way for her or for the turtle. They also saved her from developing a nasty cold from being out in the rain all day!

4. Appreciative

The officer thanked us and we thanked her and we all went on our way,” Hammett said. “She was smiling a big broad smile the entire time and she never seemed to care that she was drenched completely through. She was delightful, inspirational, kind, all the things that you think a police officer should be.”

3. The Officer

The officer’s name is Sharnise Hawkins-Graham. Last October, Hawkins-Graham was named the Greenbelt Police Officer of the Year. It is obvious that Hawkins-Graham is the kind of officers we want around!

2. Serving & Protecting

An officer’s job is to serve and protect the community and that is exactly what Hawkins-Graham did. No life was too invaluable according to her judgment.

1. Happy Turtle

Thanks to both Hawkins-Graham and the Hammets, this little snapping turtle is a happy guy. We can thoroughly assume that he has resumed his daily life activities and is enjoying it even more now!
