The BET Hip Hop Awards 2014 may have aired last night, but the videos for the much-anticipated Cypher freestyles were posted this morning for all fans to enjoy. For those who aren’t familiar with BET’s The Cyper, it is a battle freestyle put on by multiple artists in one camp or affiliation, who try to outdo each other with their own verse over one continuous beat. Amongst all of the performances that were revealed last night was one by Wiz Khalifa and his entire Taylor Gang posse that included verses from Tuki Carter (Atlanta, GA), Berner (San Francisco, CA), Chevy Woods (Pittsburgh, PA), Ty Dolla $ign (Los Angeles, CA), Juicy J (Memphis, TN), and Wiz, respectively.
Hosted by Uncle Snoop, aka Snoop Dogg, the 9th annual show put on by Black Entertainment Television originally took place on Saturday, September 20th in Atlanta, Georgia before being aired a few weeks later. One of the biggest reasons hip-hop fans from all over tune into this specific award show are for the battle cyphers that go on, featuring some of the genre’s most popular artists, as well as emcees on the rise. This year, Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang was one of the main attractions to perform the segment. Other acts included David Banner, Treach, King Los, Remy Ma, Papoose, Lil Mama, Dee-1, Logic, Troy Ave, Kevin Gates, Loaded Lux and G-Eazy. This year’s award show was also host to the first ever live Cypher performance that included Arsonal, Couture, Calicoe and Murda Mook.
Another major highlight of the night was when hip-hop icon, Doug E. Fresh, was presented with the I Am Hip Hop award. He was honored for being the originator of the beat-boxing style of making musical sounds with one’s own mouth back in 1984. Other notable winners of the night were Dr. Dre for Hustler of the Year, Drake’s Nothing Was The Same for Album of the Year, Kendrick Lamar for Lyricist of the Year, Kanye West for Best Live Performer, Hype Williams for Director of the Year, and DJ Mustard, who won multiple awards, including DJ of the Year, Producer of the Year, and MVP of the Year.
