Death Cab for Cutie Shares New Single & Announces New Album Set for August

Death Cab for Cutie fans won’t have long to wait for a new album from the indie faves. The band’s ninth album was just announced today, June 14 and will arrive on August 17. Rich Costey who worked with Death Cab on their previous album has produced the new release.

In addition to the news, Death Cab also shared the album single “Gold Rush.” “Gold Rush” features a Yoko Ono sample from the song “Mind Train” off Ono’s 1971 album Fly and now has an accompanying musical video starring Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard. The song is a discussion of the changing face of cities, in particular Gibbard’s Seattle, Gibbard has connected various places in the city with his memories and now sings about how they’re gone:

I remember a winter’s night / (Gold rush) We kissed beneath the street lamp light

(Gold rush) Outside a bar near the record store / (Gold rush) That have been condos for a year and more

(Gold rush) Now that our haunts have taken flight / (Gold rush) And been replaced with construction sites

(Gold rush) Oh, how I feel like stranger here

He explains to NPR the genesis of the single: “ The song is not a complaint about how things were better or anything like that. It’s an observation, but more about coming to terms with the passage of time and losing the people and the moments in my life all over again as I walk down a street that is now so unfamiliar.”

Speaking about the new album, Death Cab said it took awhile but is a testament to their future as a band. “In the end, we emerged with an album that we dearly love and stand proudly behind. It was important for us to create something that served as a touchstone to our past while simultaneously looked to future of all the places we can and will go. It is one of our most diverse records, and it is full of heart.”
