Dr. Dre Donates All Royalties from "Compton"

Dr. Dre to Donate All Royalties From ‘Compton’

DJ Zane Lowe has announced some uplifting news regarding the release of Dr. Dre’s new, long-awaited album, “Compton.”  Dr. Dre will be donating every single cent of the royalties he makes off of his new album to help fund the construction of a new performing arts center in Compton, California.

Dre will be teaming up with the Mayor of Compton, Aja Brown, for the Performing Arts Project. Apparently, the rapper has been reaching out to Brown for some time now with ideas about a project that could give back to the Compton community. However, the construction of a new Performing Arts Center was initially Brown’s idea and something the mayor was already in the process of working on when Dre contacted her. Upon learning of the project, Dre decided it was exactly what he needed to be a part of. “I’m honored to have been able to work with him to make a great investment in our community that will transform our city for generations to come,” Brown posted to her Facebook page last Wednesday.

Dr. Dre’s newest album has already been garnering a lot of attention, which is unsurprising seeing as the artist and producer has only released two albums since the disbanding of N.W.A in the 1990s. According to Dre, however, the plan to donate “Compton”‘s royalties to the city from the eponymous album simply felt like the perfect thing to do.  Given the album’s current rate of success – “Compton” is projected to make over $250,000 in sales and an additional $300,000 in streams – the Performing Arts Project will have no shortage of funds.

The album itself includes sixteen new tracks by Dre and will be featuring artists such as Snoop Dog, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and former N.W.A member Ice Cube. According to Dre, “Compton” is set to be his “grand finale,” an album he can be proud of. Subtitled, “A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre,” the album will function as a sort of companion to the upcoming N.W.A biopic, “Straight Outta Compton,” which is due out in Theaters August 14th.

According to Dre, “Straight Outta Compton” functioned as a major inspiration for the creation of the album itself. “I felt myself going to the studio and being so inspired by the movie that I started recording an album,” Dre admitted on The Pharmacy, his Beats 1 radio segment, earlier this month. Of course, the album was kept largely under wraps throughout its creation, leaving many fans to wonder about the state of Dre’s previously rumored album, “Detox” – an album that Dre has now revealed as defunct.

“Compton” premiered on Apple Music just this past Thursday, where it was released on a continuous loop between the hours of 6pm and 9pm, PST. The LP was officially released on Friday, August 7th.
