Seeing lions in captivity is heartbreaking! The case of two lions living to entertain parties and kids for photo shoots is gut-wrenching. Kahn and Sheila were only two of the lion cubs that owner had. Their lives were in danger and thanks to the In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Education Center from Texas, they received a chance to a happy life.
Khan was easy to treat, but Sheila was on her deathbed…
20. Kahn Was The First Rescued Lion
After the In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Education Center heard about the case of the lions, they first got Kahn. This is what the founder of In-Sync, Vicky Keahey, said about the lions and their owner…
19. Throwing Them Aside…
‘When they are no longer useful to him, he throws them aside and stops taking care of them,’ Keahey said. So, they took the poor lion and started to take care of him. He was malnourished and you won’t believe what happened to his tail!
18. Stress and Boredom
Khan was six years old when he was rescued from his owner. He was probably kept in a small space, which was stressful to the big cat. Bored and stressed, Kahn took revenge on his tail, chewing it off…
17. Good Results
But the male lion was easy to treat because he was very friendly. He was going to make it through and live a long happy life. But his walking was a little off because of his malnutrition…
16. Almost Dead
‘It was easy to treat him and get him comfortable with his new surroundings. Sheila, on the other hand, was in very bad shape … Sheila was almost dead,” said the In-Sync founder. But after they were rescued something amazing happened!
15. Sheila, the Beautiful African Lioness
Sheila was born in Africa and she was stolen and sent to a private entertainment center in Texas to live as a pet and stay pretty for photo shoots. But the living conditions at the center were terrible!
14. The US Department of Agriculture Raided the Center
After the USDA found the neglected lioness and her living conditions, they closed the center and recommended that she would be better off if she was euthanized. She was beyond saving… But then a miracle happened!
13. We Won’t Give Up!
The staff with the In-Sync center wanted to give Sheila a new chance at life and before considering euthanasia, they tried their best to keep the poor animal alive.
12. Couldn’t Drink and Eat
Sheila was only 15 months old and she couldn’t stand on her own feet. She lay on the ground and vomited all the time. In-Sync’s Angela Culver said that they tried their best and Vicky was not ready to say goodbye!
11. Force Feeding The Lion
‘For two weeks Vicky [the rescue’s founder] had to hand feed Sheila – rolling up meatballs and pushing them down her throat,’ said Angela Culver. Sheila suffered from toxoplasmosis, losing her appetite and will to live.
10. Keahey Didn’t Take No for an Answer
The founder of the In-Sync center kept treating Sheila until she began recovering. The staff had to keep the lioness’s head in such a way so that she could also drink water. But in time, Sheila will show people her unique beauty…
9. She’s Not The Only One
Sheila’s case is not unique. All over the world, people use wild animals to entertain others for money, instead of letting them live in their own habitat. What was unique at Sheila is her fur, making her a very rare cat. Curious to see what makes her special?
8. The Chinchilla Gene
Sheila is the only lion in the world with this white fur! The great news would soon arrive: Sheila pulled it through and both lions recovered. It was time for Sheila and Khan to meet once again after months of separation…
7. A New Home, With a Lovely Neighbor
‘In the meanwhile, we had finished our new lion enclosure. The way it was designed would have Kahn and Sheila living next door to each other’, said Vicky Keahey. With both lions healed, they were ready to move into their own ‘flats’. When they saw each other…
6. It Was Love at First Sight
Khan was the first one to move into the new enclosure and then when Sheila arrived, she completely fell for the beautiful lion. Keahey said that ‘Sheila spent the next few months showing off for Kahn, and Kahn strutted his stuff for her’.
5. Dating Lions
Sheila was first spayed and later, she could ‘date’ Khan. The staff wanted to see if they would get along: ‘We did short dates every day, then the dates got longer and then the dates became unsupervised’, said Vicky.
4. Getting Married
‘Then we let them spend the night together. After three months of dating, we let them get ‘married’,’ said Vicky. They could peacefully live together in the same enclose and they’re happy ever since! And Sheila seems to be the boss!
3. Three Important Things in Life
Vicky said that Sheila loves her ‘husband’, cardboard boxes and attention. And Khan is completely fine with it. He’s good-natured unless a male lion comes too close to check his wife. When that happens…
2. A Perfect Couple
‘Then Kahn lets that guy know she belongs to him,’ said Vicky. Sheila and Khan are indeed a perfect couple. Their story is amazing and we cannot believe our eyes how these two recovered and became so magnificent!
1. Our Opinion?
The guy who abused the wild animals is no longer allowed to keep other exotic animals, as he had his license revoked. We think he got away too easy! Sheila and Khan turned out well, but not all stories have a happy ending, and it’s because of people like their former owner.
