Spotify has released their “2017 Wrapped” playlists with the most streamed artists, songs, and playlists of the year. First up was the 100 most streamed tracks, with Ed Sheeran topping out the list with “Shape of You.” Sheeran actually appeared on the list several times with “Castle on the Hill” and Galway Girl” in the top 30. It seems that Spotifyers love “Shape of You,’ because as of September, the song was the most played of all time on the streaming platform, coming in at 1.32 billion streams; that number has surely changed since September. Sheeran received 47 million listeners making him also the most streamed artist. Spotify has the list of the 100 Top Tracks in 2017 for your listening pleasure.
Sheeran topping the list of top artists wasn’t with “Shape of You,” however, but “Perfect.” Drake, Kendrick Lamar, The Chainsmokers, Luis Fonsi, Coldplay and others were among the Top 10 in the list of 50 Top Spotify artists. As for top female artists, there were a few newcomers alongside mainstays Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez: Dua Lipa was #7 on the list for “New Rules,” and Alessia Cara was #10 with “Scars to Your Beautiful.” Sheeran even popped up on the female list thanks to his collaboration with Beyonce, “Perfect Duet.”
The Top Male artists of Spotify included Drake, The Weeknd, Daft Punk, Kendrick Lamar, but also Imagine Dragons, Eminem (with Beyonce in “Walk on Water”) also appeared. Spotify featured a Top Groups 2017 list with the most streamed groups, and Coldplay came out at #1 followed by Imagine Dragons, Maroon 5 and Linkin Park, but surprising was #6, The Beatles with “Blackbird.” The Beatles weren’t the only beloved group to appear either, as Queen, AC/DC, Bob Marley, and Pink Floyd were also on the list with classic songs.
Spotify rounded on their 2017 Wrapped with lists of Top Tracks of 2017, Top Latin Artists of 2017, and Top Latin Tracks of 2017. The streaming platform wasn’t done though, with additional lists of Best of 2017 Rock, Spotify Singles, Hot Country, Fresh Finds Best of 2017, Ultimate Indie, Fresh Folk, and Rap Caviar, all of which can be viewed and streamed on their Wrapped page. For those who want their music to reflect social justice issues that were prevalent in 2017, check out corresponding playlists: #BlackLivesMatter, The Bathroom Bans, Roots of Change, Transcend, No Moment for Silence, Echoes of Vietnam and more.
Finally, in case you haven’t delved into the extensive playlist library that Spotify offers, they’ve spotlighted their top playlists, with the following in the top 10.
- Today’s Top Hits
- Rap Caviar
- Baila Reggaeton
- Viva Latino!
- Peaceful Piano
- New Music Friday
- Get Turnt
- Good Vibes
- Relax and Unwind

If we have to read into these facts and figures, it would be that Spotify listeners see a need for music that’s calming and energizing for good vibes. Hopefully all of these songs will do just that. And if not, there’s always the playlist Kickass Metal with 50 songs.
