Bailey the cat was rescued by a woman named Erin Merryn. Once Erin saw the cat, it jumped into her arms and immediately claimed her. Now at age 13, the cat is Erin’s daughter’s best friend and reading partner.
19. A Kitten In Need Of A Home
Erin first discovered Bailey when he was a kitten and fell in love with him immediately. She was still in college and decided that she loved him so much that she had to take him into her dorm, which obviously wasn’t allowed.
17. Caught with the Kitten
Speaking to Love Meow, Erin said that she was caught and given 48 hours to remove the cat. She was heartbroken but decided to try to find a good family for the kitty. Her parents weren’t prepared to take Bailey because they already had a dog and two cats, so Erin tried to find an alternative. Finally, she found a woman in her 80’s who was interested in giving Bailey a home.
16. Saying Goodbye
The separation was hard and Erin says she cried for four hours on her way to college. Her father tried to comfort her, saying that she could always find another cat. Erin disagreed, as she knew Bailey was special. “He is one of a kind, and you will never find another with a personality like his.”
15. Bringing Bailey Home
Bailey wasn’t getting along in his new house and Erin needed to find a new home. She knew just the one: hers. She decided to take him back home over winter break and plotted to convince her parents to allow him to live there. They finally agreed.
14. The New Baby
Erin has been with Bailey ever since. Four years ago, she gave birth to Abby, her first daughter. She wondered what would happen when she brought Abby home from the hospital. She didn’t have to worry: Bailey loved the baby.
13. Baby’s Best Friend
Bailey was devoted to Abby from day one and showed her all of the love he could with purrs, snuggles, and gentle headbutts. He was her feline big brother and by her side constantly.
12. Bailey and Abby, Friends for Life
When Abby began taking her first steps, Bailey was there to cheer her on and follow her all over the place. Erin was delighted to see that Abby loved Bailey as much as she loved him.
11. A Loving Cat
Bailey is what Erin describes as “attention hungry” and says he follows them from room to room. He loves to be where they are and is definitely bound to his family. He just needs to snuggle!
10. Storytime with Bailey
When Abby began trying to read, Erin noticed that Bailey was enamored with the process. Abby would sit with a book, sounding out the words and Bailey would just be happy through it all.
9. Hannah Joins the Family
Erin gave birth to a second daughter, Hannah, when Abby was two years old. Bailey welcomed the new addition just like he did with Abby and was a patient loving friend. He still loved to cuddle with Abby for naptime too. He even cuddled with Erin’s baby belly!
8. Love Bug
Bailey is definitely a love bug and loves to climb into the beds of the girls, Erin told Love Meow. He’s also affectionate with guests and tries to sit in their lap when they visit. Erin loves the personality of her sweet cat.
7. Tell Me a Story
Abby reads to Bailey every day, sharing the latest books she’s found. She even read aloud the book My Name is Bob, a picture book about a famous street cat named Bob. Bob looks just like Bailey, so it was a perfect pick for their next read.
6. Bailey the Reading Coach
Studies show that kids have great success reading to animals, which is why shelters have instituted reading programs where kids can read to animals who are awaiting adoption. Bailey is a great reading coach for Abby and will always be there for a story.
Over on Bailey’s Instagram, Bailey_No_Ordinary_Cat, Erin shares snaps of Abby and her feline friend together. If you love cats, it’s a must-follow, as these pictures are adorable. You’ll see Bailey playing with the girls while in costume, snuggling during a reading session and more. The snaps have even made their way to Buzzfeed and Ellen!
4. Storytime for All
Abby delights not only in reading to her kitty friend but also to her little sister. Here you can see her reading the beloved book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. The audience is Bailey, of course, plus Hannah, and some plush friends.
3. Patient Pal
Bailey doesn’t just love reading with the girls, he loves all activity! Even tea parties. Erin said that Abby gave Bailey plenty of “veggies and tuna here.” Bailey is there for all of their activity and especially loves that he gets treats during it!
Abby has even taken up teaching Bailey and her sister! Here the trio are learning valuable school lessons. What could they be learning? It’s clear that one student is not into the instruction as much as the other two but it’s 100% adorable.
1. Baby on the Way
As of Summer 2018, Erin is pregnant with her third child. When posting on Instagram, she noticed that Bailey has managed to photobomb every single picture at least once! We bet that Bailey will love the new addition just as much as he loves his two girls.
