It’s a pretty good time to be fighting Foo. After selling out Wrigley Field in mere minutes (check the comments on their Facebook page for verification), Foo Fighters announced the details and on-sale information for their Fourth of July 20th Anniversary Blowout: an all-day affair at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC.
The alt-rock giants have been making the rounds and revisiting the cities where they filmed and recorded their eight-part HBO documentary/upcoming eighth record, Sonic Highways, playing club shows and announcing much larger stadium dates for the coming year. After the official Wrigley announcement and the airing of their DC-centric second episode, the Foos posted a picture of themselves standing in the middle of RFK Stadium holding custom-made DC United jerseys, hinting at an imminent announcement of a massive headlining date.
At 7am today, a post on their Facebook page revealed the lineup for the huge party they will be throwing at RFK next summer, which hits on almost every city they passed through on their Sonic Highways tour of the US. Of course, headlining the bill are the Foo Fighters themselves. But for this show, they’ve stacked the deck with support, covering a wide range of genres.
Blues legend Buddy Guy leads the pack representing Chicago, while Gary Clark Jr. brings love from Austin, Texas with his smooth, soulful boogie. Rock legends Heart (Seattle) and Joan Jett (Los Angeles) give a little extra edge, while New York’s LL Cool J gives the affair a little hip hop swagger. Next up is DC’s own Trouble Funk with their go-go beats, and rounding off the day is New Orleans’ proud son, Trombone Shorty.
Some are surprised, however, that there is not an artist or band from Nashville on the list, since that is the city where Foo Fighters recorded the song “Congregation” for the coming record. But fans can rest assured that this is going to be a party with Fourth of July fireworks, a motorcycle rally, and a barbecue. Tickets go on sale this Saturday at 10am, $75, General Admission only.
