‘Glee’ Gets Special Recognition Award from GLAAD

A day after Glee aired its final episode on the Fox Network, the show received a Special Recognition Award from GLAAD. GLAAD is a group that promotes gay, lesbian, and transgender presence in the media. The 26th Annual GLAAD Media Awards took place on March 21st in Los Angeles, California. There were several other awards handed out that night including the Vanguard Award, which was rewarded to actress Kerry Washington (Scandal). “She’s done quite a bit for the LGBT community and she’s a phenomenal spokeswoman for us. She’s got our back, and she always has,” GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said about Kerry Washington. 

The lead singer of Against Me!, Laura Jane Grace, received the GLAAD award for Outstanding Music Artist. In 2012, Grace revealed she is transgender. This year’s ceremony featured appearances from Ellen DeGeneres, Channing Tatum, Viola Davis, Alex Newell, Zoe Saldana, Rita Volk, and more. The music for the awards’ show was provided by DJ Kim Anh and Sam Sparro. The GLAAD Awards ceremony will resume in New York on May 9th. 

Glee aired its final two-hour special on March 20th. The musical television show had a number of LGBT characters on the show, some of which included Jane Lynch (Sue), Darren Criss (Blaine), Chris Colfer (Kurt), Heather Morris (Brittany), Alex Newell (Unique), and more. Glee has proven to be one of the most successful television series in the last decade. The show has been nominated for nineteen Emmy Awards and four Golden Globes. Glee won a Golden Globe for Best Television Series (Musical or Comedy) in 2010. Jane Lynch won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and Chris Colfer was honored with the Best Supporting Actor award at the Golden Globes.  

Glee has also been very successful in the music industry. The songs covered on Glee have been released on iTunes, and the television series has also released several albums. Some of those projects include Glee: The Music, Volume 1, Glee: The Music, Volume 2, and Glee: The Music, Volume 3 Showstoppers. The singles released from Glee have sold over thirty million digital downloads, and the Glee albums have accumulated over ten million copies sold.
