Singer-songwriter Gregory Porter can now add “most streamed jazz album of all time” to his list of achievements. The 2014 Grammy Award winning album, Liquid Spirit, was released early September 2013 and was produced by Brian Bacchus, who has also worked with Norah Jones. Liquid Spirit is Gregory Porter’s third album since his Grammy-nominated debut, Water, in 2010. He has been widely praised by critics and fans alike for both his compositions and singing style. His second album, Be Good, was released in 2012 with the title track, “Be Good (Lion’s Song),” being nominated for Best Traditional R&B Performance at the 2013 Grammys.
Sam Smith, four-time Grammy winner and avid Gregory Porter fan, has expressed interest in working with Porter and even recommended him to the British Electronic group, Disclosure. This recommendation led to a working relationship between Porter and Disclosure. Ed Sheeran has also stated he is a fan of Porter, even tweeting lyrics to “Water Under Bridge,” his latest single. Ed Sheeran, who was set to be part of a Stevie Wonder tribute called, Songs in the Key of Life-An All Star Grammy Salute, which aired last night. Along with Ed Sheeran, several of music’s biggest players was part of the tribute including Beyoncé, Gary Clark Jr., Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga and more singing some of Stevie Wonder’s greatest hits.
Lady Gaga who is no stranger to the music scene, debuted in 2008 with her album, The Fame. “Just Dance” and “Poker Face” were both global chart toppers. The Fame peaked at number two on Billboard 200 and became the fifth best selling album of 2009, selling over four and a half million copies in the U.S. It is also one of the seventh best selling digital albums of all time. 2009’s The Fame Monster, reached number five on Billboard 200, with “Bad Romance,” reaching the number two spot on Billboard Hot 100. It was nominated for six Grammys.
Born This Way, Gaga’s second full-length album topped the charts in over twenty countries and sold over a million copies in its first week. Along with her six Grammys, Lady Gaga has more than ten MTV Video Music Music Awards and thirteen Guinness World Records. Gaga is set to perform a “special tribute performance” at this year’s Oscars Ceremony, marking her first time performing at the Oscars. Other artists slated to perform include Adam Levine, Rita Ora, and John Legend.
