Canadian singer Grimes – alias Claire Boucher – will finally release a new album this week. Her web site will be relaunched with a new store and all new merchandise.
Grimes released her last album in 2015, Art Angels, and it was universally acclaimed. NME named it album of the year, beating out Lana Del Rey, Kendrick Lamar and Blur for the honor. Art Angels was also named best album of the year by Exclaim! and Stereogum. It hit number 1 on the Billboard US Top Alternative Album Chart and number 2 on the Billboard Top Independent Album chart. Grimes won the 2016 International award at the Socan Annual Awards and the 2016 Harper’s Bazaar Musician of the Year Award in October.
Grimes has been teasing a new album all year. She shared a tracklist that is subject to change back in May:
- that’s what the drugs r 4
- So heavy I fell through the earth
- Darq Souls
- adore you (Beautiful Game)
- Black Swan Blues
- blaze forever like a useless star
- cryptid (Heavy Metal magazine)
- Favourite Psycho

Grimes also landed an ad placement in an Apple commercial with an unreleased song from the upcoming album, “That’s What the Drugs Are For,” and made many headlines for her escapades with billionaire Elon Musk. Grimes met Musk after they both made a pun on rococo and the thought experiment Roko’s basilisk. They attended the Met Gala together in May. (Azealia Banks made headlines after tweeting that she was trapped in Musk’s house with Grimes and Musk, claiming the Russians want Musk dead, that Musk was smoking weed, and many other bizarre factoids.)
Most recently, Grimes shared snippets from two songs. She described the first as a “cheesy love song,” while the second should be considered an “ethereal chav jam.” That missive was in June. In November, she finally described her new album as imminent. Grimes confirmed the release date for the new album on Instagram when she announced her new store and website. “!New music coming Nov 29!” She also showed a logo which could be part of the album cover. It shows the word “Grimes” written in black and white three times. The Russian translation of Grimes is then written in pink. Any additional details will have to wait for later.
Although Grimes has been slow to release another album, that doesn’t mean she’s been totally missing in action. Grimes was featured on “Pynk” by Janelle Monáe. She was featured on “Love4Eva” by LOONA yyxy from their EP Beauty & the Beat. She has worked with several artists during her hiatus. She worked with Poppy on “Play Destroy.” She also collaborated with Jimmy Urine from Mindless Self Indulgence for another track. She wrote the theme song for the animated Netflix show Hilda, which is about a fearless blue-haired girl who “travels from a wilderness full of elves and giants to a bustling city packed with new friends and mysterious creatures.” Grimes also will be featured on Bring Me the Horizon’s new album Amo, singing on the track “Nihlist Blues.”
