When this baby moose was left all alone, it seemed pretty certain that she wouldn’t make it to see the next day. With no food or shelter around, a baby moose doesn’t have many options for survival. That’s why when this man found her and rescued her life, this moose decided to show her appreciation in the sweetest way ever.
20. Unexpected Discovery
Erikas Plucas was heading back to his Lithuanian home when he stumbled across the strangest discovery. Right outside of his house gates was a little baby moose. Based on her size, Plucas assumed that she was only a few weeks old.
19. Bad Situation
Plucas immediately started looking for the mother since the moose was so young, but the mother was nowhere to be found. His initial thought was that hunters had cornered the mother and that the baby moose had been able to escape the situation. Regardless, the moose was all alone now…
“The first sight of her was heartbreaking. She was starved, dirty, sad, her fur was infested with flies, and she was so terrified of me when she first saw me, but was too weak to run away, to even get up,” Plucas told The Dodo in an interview. Plucas didn’t know what to do, but he knew he couldn’t leave the moose alone without helping at all.
17. Saving Grace
Plucas decided that something had to be done, so he picked the little moose up and brought her into his home. From there, Plucas was pretty lost at what to do, as he had never had to take care of a moose before. That’s when he decided to contact animal services.
16. Animal Services
Plucas called animal services once he was in his home and settled in. He was looking for advice and instead he was greeted with a hostile tone from the animal rescuers. They immediately yelled at him for getting involved in the first place.
“I was met with hostility and contempt,” Plucas said. “‘It is illegal, you should not do it, let nature take care of it’ was all I heard.” Despite all of the negative commentary, Plucas could not just abandon the baby moose after bringing her into his home.
14. Helping Out
Plucas knew that if he didn’t help out before animal rescuers arrived that the moose might not make it. So while he waited, Plucas began to go out into his yard and look for giant leaves to feed her. He even got some milk for her to drink up.
13. Next Day
Animal rescue workers arrived the next day and did not come with good news. According to the rescue workers there was nothing that they could do to help the poor moose. Then, they told Plucas the worst news of all…
12. Bad News
“Since here in Lithuania we do not have a special institution who would take care of wild orphan animals, they called local hunters and asked if they can take her,” Plucas said. “I knew it meant certain death for her, so I insisted I should keep the baby, and they agreed.“
From then on, the baby moose and Plucas were buddies. Plucas named her Emma and he began to figure out how to care for her. The first few weeks were pretty difficulty but after a while he caught the hang of it. Emma began to get super attached and would do the cutest thing when Plucas would leave.
Emma would immediately begin crying whenever Plucas would have to leave the house. “She was afraid of everything but me,” Plucas told The Dodo. Plucas would often sleep next to her in the barn so that she would feel safe. Emma’s love for her adoptive father is definitely strong!
9. Daily Walks
Emma began to get stronger and bigger as the months went by. Knowing that he would have to let her go off on her own soon, Plucas would take Emma on daily walks through the woods in order to get her accustomed to the idea. Emma was scared to go in the woods in the beginning, but with her dad by her side she faced her fears.
8. Teaching Her
Plucas knew that he would have to teach Emma to adapt to her new forest settings. He took it upon himself to try and teach her how to gather food and make the best choices in the woods. The more effort Plucas put in, the better Emma adapted to the woods. Soon it would be time for her to go…
7. Independent Moose
The more accustomed she grew to the woods the more confidently she’d venture in without Plucas by her side. Eventually Emma would just wander off on her own and Plucas would stand by like a worried father sending off his kid on the first day of school. Plucas expressed his worry on the first night Emma didn’t come home.
6. Worried Father
“I remember those first nights that she didn’t come home,” Plucas said. “Oh, I barely slept. But she grew up, I had to get over it. After all, it was my goal from the very beginning.” Now Emma is living back in the wild, where she belongs but she has never forgotten the man who cared for her.
While Emma may live in the woods, she never forgets to visit her father. Emma comes back to see Plucas almost every day. The two can often be spotted playing in the woods together, genuinely enjoying each other’s company. Emma continues to love her father, however, she is pretty cautious around other humans…
3. Still Worried
Plucas still worries about hunters hurting Emma so he has done his best to make sure that doesn’t happen. “I had some hunters over for them to see her as not just a nice, warm steak with potatoes and vegetables on the table, but as a very intelligent and loving animal,” Plucas said.
“Some claimed they will put down hunting rifles for good, and some promised never to shoot a moose again,” Plucas explained. These days, Plucas is excited for another reason, as he believes Emma to be pregnant and even while pregnant, Emma still makes time for Plucas.
1. Happy Father
Thanks to his caring nature, Plucas was able to save the life of a moose that began his best friend in the world. “I’m her world now and she is mine,” Plucas revealed. “Sometimes I wonder, was it me who saved her, or is it the other way around?”
