Hiking can be an exhilarating experience as you engulf yourself with the beauty of nature and inhale that fresh air. However, if you choose to hike alone, it can sometimes get dangerous. When one hiker was off on a solo adventure, he heard a strange noise coming from an abandoned mine. He was shocked by what he found inside…
20. A Hike
In October 2017, Preston Gladd of Park County, Colorado decided to head off on a hike through Pike National Forest. Although the greenery on the trail is gorgeous, Preston was more interested in heading off the trails.
Instead of staying on the trail, Preston decided that he would get off the trail and explore many of the abandoned mines. So he approached one mine in particular and got started on exploring it. However, he had no idea the danger that would soon face him!
However, the danger wasn’t one that you might immediately suspect. It wasn’t a hidden shaft or some dangerous gases. Still, the danger was very real…
17. Strange Noises
“I just heard growling and animal sounds,” Preston told CBS News Denver in an interview. “So I thought it was something living in the mine.” The noises freaked Preston out.
16. Scared Off
The noises scared Preston off and he didn’t want to disturb someone or something if they were living inside of the mine. So he decided to brush off the whole incident and walk away from the mine. However, it wasn’t so easy for him to forget the noises.
15. Thoughts Plagued
For the next couple of days, Preston couldn’t shake off the feeling that he should have gone down to see what the noise was. “I’ve been wanting to go in and explore the cave,” he said, “and I like animals a lot so I couldn’t stop thinking about the animal.”
14. A Mission
Finally, Preston could no longer brush off the thoughts. So he got together his hiking gear and his two dogs, Meeko and Lola, and headed over to the site of the mine. This time, however, he didn’t hear growling at all. Instead, he heard something else entirely…
As Preston approached the mine he heard barking coming out of it! “So I crawled down into the mine and looked down the shaft and saw there was somebody’s dog with a collar stuck down at the bottom running around.” You won’t believe what happened next! It’s incredible…
12. Rescue Mode
Preston immediately got into rescue mode as he knew he couldn’t just live the dog down there to wither away all alone. So he called his friend, Gannon Ingels, for back-up. This was going to be a two-man job.
11. Phone Call
“Gannon,” he said over the phone, “that mine I was exploring the other day? There’s a dog down here. Get the gear. We’ve got to save it.” So how did Gannon respond to the call?
“I was stoked,” Gannon told CBS News. “I was like, ‘What? Puppy to save? For sure, way better than the nap I was going to take.’” So Gannon and Preston’s then-girlfriend, Portia Scorn, grabbed all of the necessary gear and headed over to the mine. When they got there… they were stunned!
Finally, everyone was at the mine, however, it wouldn’t be easy to get to the bottom. The mine opened into a 60-foot tunnel that then dropped 25 feet. The dog was at the very bottom of the mine. Then they came up with this brilliant idea…
8. Rescue Plan
The three of them then came up with a rescue plan: Gannon would lower Preston down into the mine shaft. Then Preston would wrap the rope around the dog so that they could pull him up. So Preston started his way down into the mine. Do you think they succeeded? Check out the next photo!
Once Preston got the rope around the dog it was clear skies from there. Gannon began to pull the puppy up to the surface. The dog was so stunned as she saw daylight for the first time in so long. Luckily, the team came prepared with essentials for her. The next photo is truly heartbreaking…
6. Food & Water
The group came prepared with a dog bowl and dog food. They quickly filled the dog bowl with water and fed the pup some food. The dog was so happy to finally have something to eat and drink after being trapped for so many days. But there was something else that needed to be done and you won’t believe what it is.
5. Cleaning Up
Once they brought her to the house, Preston took her into the tub to get her cleaned up. Then, it was time to take her to the vet. They wanted to make sure that she was okay after going through such a bad fall.
At the vet’s office, Preston was relieved to find out that the pup was doing great. “She was not as bad as I expected,” he said. Now it was time for them to see if they could find her original owners.
3. Social Media
Portia then went onto social media to post the rescue footage of the dog. More than 750 people shared the footage and eventually it got to the dog’s owner. The owner contacted her immediately and wanted his precious dog, Cheyenne, back.
Portia set up a day when they could meet so that Cheyenne’s owner could get her back. He was so relieved to see her after thinking that she ran away. It was a heartfelt moment for everyone!
Thanks to Preston’s bravery and persistence, Cheyenne was able to live another day and be returned back to her owner. It is amazing and inspiring to know that there are such brave and wonderful people out there.
