The American actress, Broadway star, voice actress, singer and songwriter, Idina Menzel, is known for a great number of impressive activities. However, you might recognize her for her role in Glee, where the actress plays Shelby Corcoran, the head coach of New Direction’s rival show choir, Vocal Adrenaline. After leaving Glee, what’s next for Idina Menzel?
Shelby is a returning member of the Glee cast, appearing in all five seasons. While the Tony Award-winning actress entered the series as an arch-nemesis, it is slowly revealed how intertwined she is with the New Direction crew’s lives. Not only is Shelby the biological mother of Rachel, she is also the adoptive mother of Puck and Quinn’s daughter, Beth.
Unfortunately for Gleeks, Idina was released from the fifth season after her character, Shelby, retired from show choir. When Glee returned this January, Mr. Schue has taken over Vocal Adrenaline, and the original New Direction cast has returned for an emotion-filled premiere. It seems everyone is running into problems in their adult lives, and they’re sorely in need of a little musical therapy. As for Idina, she has moved on to bigger and greater things.
In 2013, Idina’s musical acting career seemed to have come to a halt. But right off of Glee, the actress found stardom again in her new role as Elsa, the ice queen from Frozen. In Disney’s animated feature, terrified Queen Elsa goes into hiding after she accidentally loses control of her snow powers. Queen Elsa’s song, “Let It Go,” was one of the biggest successes of the film, drawing attention to Idina Menzel’s incredible voice once again. The actress’ sudden popularity was perfect for Idina’s transition into Broadway. The following year, Idina decided to return to her beginnings in the new Broadway musical, If/Then.
For the first time since Wicked, Idina returned to the stage as the leading lady in the musical, If/Then. In this Broadway show, a 40-year-old woman moves to New York looking for a fresh start. Idina has described her character, Elizabeth, as a strong, complex protagonist. Along with a new home and friends, Elizabeth wants the change of scenery to spark her career.
The Broadway show was not as successful as its Wicked predecessor. On March 22nd, the musical If/Then will close after 401 performances. Idina Menzel hasn’t commented much on her life after Broadway, but she has planned a concert tour in the U.S., the UK, and Japan. Her concert tour will take place on June 1st.
