There are two old sayings about dogs: “Man’s best friend” and “a boy and his dog.” But dogs love little girls, too. Recently a little girl was saved by an overprotective Newfoundland dog who was owned by her grandparents. Talk about a great day at the beach!
14. A Day in the Sun
A young girl in this viral video was having a blast playing in the sea and sand near Gouville-sur-Mer, France. She was on holiday with her parents and grandparents. The colorful houses that line the beach make for an amazing getaway.
The seven-year-old girl was frolicking in the warm waters, splashing and laughing. Although she was several yards from her family, they didn’t need to worry. The Newfoundland dog belongs to her grandparents, and he was there watching over everyone. The Newfoundland was acting as babysitter, hanging right by her side.
12. Gentle Waves
The video clearly shows some gentle waves in the background. But the little girl wasn’t afraid at all. She looks perfectly at home in the surf and sand. She’s enjoying the water on a very sunny day. Maytas, however, was not convinced.
11. Newfoundland Watchfulness
Although the family could have stepped in if she was in danger, the Newfoundland was determined to get there first. He stayed right next to her while she played. Newfoundlands, also called “Newfs”, are large working dogs with a dignified bearing.
10. Nanny Dogs
Newfoundlands are often called “nanny dogs” because they make such good companions for families. According to the American Kennel Club, Newfies have “earned a reputation as a patient and watchful “nanny dog” for kids.” This grey dog certainly fits the bill!
Maytas seemed very cautious with the girl. He doesn’t want her to get in the water too much, and he is also not playing with her either. No, Maytas is focused on her safety. No wonder families love Newfies!
8. Catch a Wave
The waves start to get a bit choppier and the girl doesn’t really notice. However, Maytas does, so the dog continues to be very watchful. They are both being watched by the family who is also nearby.
7. Crashing Waves
The waves pick up steam a bit more, causing them to roll over the girl. Still, they were fairly gentle, and the girl isn’t intimidated at all. In fact, the waves cause her to laugh each time they hit her. She remains in the water, just soaking it all in. With Maytas nearby, of course.
6. Maytas to the Rescue
That’s when the dog decided enough was enough. As you can see, when a small wave appeared to crash over her, Maytas stepped in. The girl started to tumble, so Maytas grabbed her t-shirt with his teeth! Although the wave was small, when it went over his head he decided she needed a rescue.
Maytas is on high alert. He figured the little girl was in danger and needed help to be dragged to safety. He started to pull her by the shirt and drag her to shore. Smart dog – it knew that getting away from the water was very important. The dog was strong but didn’t even leave a mark on the girl.
4. In Safe Paws
The Newfoundland was determined but also gentle. The dog would stop every few feet and check on his charge. Was she still breathing? Was she okay? No wonder people enjoy having such a conscientious pet. The family knew the girl was in safe paws.
The girl was never truly in danger. She had a great time playing with her rescuer, splashing and giggling as she was dragged to the shore. She thought the dog was being silly, but she loved it. Even when they made it to shallow waters, Maytas wasn’t done. The goal was to get her out of the water!
2. Anti-Wave Protector
Maytas takes the job so seriously that when a wave comes, the dog pulls the girl in the other direction, away from the wave. Just another example of how smart these dogs truly are – they know exactly what they are doing. Maytas the hero!
1. Video Star
The girl’s mother happened to have her cell phone handy as this was happening. She got the entire priceless interaction on video. It has been viewed thousands of times, and even made the newspaper! Overall this was the best advertisement for a nanny dog that one could possibly have.
