Jay Z bid to purchase the music and video streaming company TIDAL for over $50 million dollars earlier this year. The offer was recently accepted this month, and now his S. Carter Enterprises owns the streaming company. The hip-hop mogul has integrated the music platform WiMP, which will now function under the TIDAL umbrella.
TIDAL has a library of more than 25 million songs, and it streams at more than four times the rate of its competitors. The streaming company also has over 70,000 music videos, which will be accessible through an app for tablets, web player, iOS, and Android phones. To date, WiMP has over 500,000 paid subscribers since its launch in 2011.
Jay Z, or Shawn Carter, continues to build his brand outside of his hip-hop career. His Roc Nation music management company recently partnered with Three Six Zero Entertainment. Three Six Zero is a full-service management company that will represent actors, directors, and writers in the film and television industry. The management company will also offer branding and financial services for its clients, which presently includes Calvin Harris, Frank Ocean, deadmau5, The Prodigy, Chris Lake, and others.
Roc Nation also manages several big names in the music business including J. Cole, Rihanna, Kanye West, Big Sean, DJ Mustard, Shakira, Grimes, Meek Mill, HAIM, Fabolous, Timbaland, Angie Martinez and more. Roc Nation’s music publishing company represents Rita Ora, Jahlil Beats, Ludwig Goransson, and others.
Roc Nation have also built a strong foundation in the sports arena. Some of Roc Nation’s high-profile professional athletes include Robinson Cano (MLB), CC Sabathia (MLB), Victor Cruz (NFL), Dez Bryant (NFL), Ndamukong Suh (NFL), Kevin Durant (NBA), Skylar Diggins (WNBA), Andre Ward (boxer), Miguel Cotto (boxer), and projected NFL first round draft pick Todd Gurley.
Earlier this year, Roc Nation offered boxer Adrien Broner a contract, reportedly worth $40 million dollars for five years. Broner, a three-time world champion, rejected the deal. The boxer publicly stated that he felt disrespected by the offer, and he believes he is worth a lot more than $40 million dollars. Broner, who is affiliated with Floyd Mayweather Jr., later apologized for his comments regarding Jay Z and Roc Nation Sports.
