Last night hip hop group Cali Swag District lost one third of their lineup when Cahron “JayAre” Childs died in a hospital of cardiac arrest. Childs had been admitted for “unknown reasons” sometime last night. Childs’s death was at least partially caused from the sickle cell anemia he suffered from his entire life.
“Sickle cell took my brother away from me today,” Cali Swag District leader Corey “Smove Da General” Fowler lamented in a tweet last night, though he optimistically added, “With that being said I’m proud to know that with that disease he made the best of his life … I jus(sp) saw my bro literally fight for his life I told him ‘I love you bro’ hope’n he heard me.”
This is the second death in the band’s history. 22 Year old Montae “M-Bone” Talbert was the victim of a drive-by shooting in Inglewood back in May of 2011. Cali Swag District was initially formed in 2010 by producers Big Y and Dairold Potts of Death Row Records. The band’s debut album The Kickback was a runaway success thanks largely to the song “Teach My How To Dougie”. The subsequent music video for the song led the “Dougie” dance to be one of the most popular trends of that year. With two band member deaths only three years apart it is unknown when, if at all Cali Swag District will be able to follow up with a second album.
With JayAre’s death only Smove and Chante “Yung” Glee make up the band. It will be interesting to see if Smove and Yung work together to write a musical tribute to their fallen friend. “How to Do That” was released by the band weeks after the murder of “M-Bone” as a way to tribute his life and cope with his death. The heartfelt lyrics included “M-Bone lives through me, Smoove, and Yung/ So when we all turnt up, he still having fun.” It will be interesting to see what Smove and Yung are able to do with Cali Swag District for the future.
JayAre was 25 years old at the time of his death.
