John Legend said that people who are critical of Kanye West walking to the stage during Beck‘s acceptance speech are overreacting. Legend believes anyone who is upset about West’s behavior, should just relax because it was funny. The singer also believes Beck is very talented, and he was deserving of the Album of the Year award. “Beck is super talented and I have several of his albums and I’ve listened to him for a long time. I think people were surprised that he won, but that doesn’t mean he’s not deserving. That just means people thought other people were going to win too,” Legend told US Weekly

During the Grammy awards show, Kim Kardashian posted a photo on social media featuring herself, John Legend, and Legend’s wife Chrissy Teigen. In the photo, Kardashian had a surprised look on her face, Legend also sported a look of shock, and Teigen stuck her fist in her mouth. The photo’s caption read, “This is the Beck won that award face?!?!?!,” Kardashian wrote on Twitter. Legend would later tweet that the photo Kardashian posted was not taken after Beck won his controversial award. “Congrats to all winners, including @beck. Much respect. That selfie was taken before Album of the Year was announced,” Legend tweeted.

The singer would also address people who were saying it was disrespectful to say Beck’s Album of the Year win was a “surprise.” In reality, Beck even said he was surprised he won the award. “It would be a surprise with this record, honestly,” Beck responded when he was asked about Morning Phase‘s nomination for album of the year. “Not that being shocked he won would have been a sin. Every article I’ve read about it said it was surprising. He’s still a great artist,” Legend tweeted.

For those who are wondering why so many people were shocked Beck’s album won, the truth is in the numbers. Beck’s Morning Phase was the lowest-selling album to win the Album of the Year award since 2008. The project also sold less copies than the other albums nominated for this year’s album of the year award. Morning Phase has sold a little over 300,000 copies since it was released last year. All of this controversy may give the album a record sales boost.
