Just the other week, 17-year-old “Pretty Brown Eyes” singer Cody Simpson was heading Family Channel’s Big Ticket Summer Concert, and Justin Bieber was getting back together with Selena Gomez. Today’s announcement comes from both of them: they’re doing a collaborative album together.
What’s the link between these two? Simpson is managed by Scooter Braun, who is Bieber’s consultant as well. Simpson will likely head over to sign with Braun’s School Boy Records any day now, seeing as he just left his major label deal.
Connections aside, Bieber saw some of Simpson’s music clips on Instagram and started the conversation. Simpson recollected the phone call to Tribute: “He was like, ‘Man, you’re getting really good. I’d love you to come and write.'”
It was just an experiment at first. “We went in and ended up being in the studio till six in the morning,” Simpson said. “We came out with a song, went in the next night and ended up writing like 12 songs in seven days, working all night.”
Bieber has done a few one-time duets with big names in the past, such as Mariah Carey, Carly Rae Jepsen, Usher, and R Kelly. This is the first time his team-up is album-length.
“He’s like a big brother to me,” Cody said of Justin earlier this year. “Obviously, we’re all young and he gets himself into some stuff sometimes. [But] he’s a person I’d go to for everything.”
Australia native Simpson got himself started in 2008 when he created a YouTube account so he could share songs and covers. He came out with an EP in 2010, which he’s been following up with more EPs, singles, and albums in the four years since. The word is that both he and Bieber are separately working on solo albums as well. While Simpson’s last full album, Surfers Paradise, reached No. 10 in America, Bieber’s most recent Journals didn’t do so hot.
What are we to expect on this album? Simpson has thus far referred to it as a “smack bang” collection of duets, and also disclosed that he plays all the guitars on the album. Bieber has given away a little less, but there was a tweet yesterday: “Big news this month @CodySimpson.” Expect to see the Bieber-Simpson combo debut sometime this November.
