The MTV European Music Awards nominations have arrived, promising a select group of superstars to appear in Scotland. On November 9th, the 2014 ceremony at Glasgow’s Hydro venue will showcase the performers who are up for the prestigious awards (and many of them are nominated for more than one). Katy Perry is leading the pack with a total of seven nominations.

The “Roar” songstress is up for “Best Song” with her “Dark Horse” track (featuring Juicy J). She’s also nominated for Best Pop Artist, Best Female Vocalist (up against Beyonce), Best Live, Best Look, Best US Act, and Best Music Video (also for “Dark Horse”). The “Best Song” category is particularly competitive, with Eminem’s “The Monster” and Ariana Grande’s “Problem” in the mix. There’s also the popular hit “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, and the soulful melody “Stay With Me” from Sam Smith.

Ariana Grande is up for six awards. She falls into three categories with Perry, in “Best Song,” “Best Female,” and in “Best Pop.” In “Best New,” she competes with Sam Smith, Charli XCX, 5 Seconds of Summer, and Kiesza. Grande has had a great year, releasing her second number one album in less than twelve months. She also became one of only four women to have three singles in the top ten of the Hot 100 simultaneously.

Both Pharrell Williams and 5 Seconds of Summer are up for five honors, but none of them overlap. The “Happy” hitmaster falls into “Best Song,” and “Best Video” with the famous tune. The music video for “Happy” has a 24-hour runtime and features a host of dancing pedestrians. Pharrell is also up for “Best Male,” “Best World Stage,” and “Best US Act.” 5 Seconds of Summer will compete for the interesting “Biggest Fans” category, alongside Grande, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, and One Direction.

One Direction is also vying for “Best Pop” and “Best Live,” but they’re highly likely to win “Biggest Fans” for 2014. The five guys met with almost unanimous praise when they debuted single “Fireproof” off Four ahead of the album’s release. The single was available for one day and scored 1.1 million downloads, and the album will arrive November 17th. For more categories and nominees, check out the full list here.
