It looks like one of the biggest drumming fights ever is just getting started. Drummer Lars Ulrich of Metallica has accepted the challenge layed down to him by lookalikes Will Ferrell and Chad Smith. After being targeted by Ferrell and Smith in their interview with Spin, Ulrich wasted no time in answering the call.

The seeds to this three-way music clash began a few weeks ago when Will Ferrell appeared on The Tonight Show the Jimmy Fallon to challenge Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith to a drum off. The challenge was out of the frustration Ferrell supposedly received from constantly being mistaken for the drummer. One week later, the two met on the show and proceeded to duke it out for ultimate supremacy of awesome. The prize of a golden cowbell ended up going to Ferrell, though the real winners were the viewers who got to witness such a hilarious display.

It looks like another one of these drummer battles will happen very soon. Ulrich released an official statement today stating “I’m sure that with a bit of practice, I could give Chad a run for his money. But Will? That’s a whole different story. He rules the “bad-ass drummer universe.” I mean, you’re talking about a guy who’s so next level, actually, so beyond next level, that he may just be completely unreachable! That said, I’m definitely up for the challenge…Bring it on!!!” A few minutes later Chad Smith offered some friendly advice to his opponent via Facebook, suggesting Lars “Leave the double bass drums at home and load up on cowbells!”. If there’s one thing this battle needs, it’s more cowbell.

It’s unknown at this time where the challenge will take place, though the challengers may have the home field advantage of Jimmy Fallon on their side. Ulrich’s fears for Ferrell’s ability are appropriate considering the talent he displayed in his duel with Smith (in actuality tonight show bandleader Questlove secretly played over Ferrell to make him appear superior). It will be interesting to see whether this will be the final music battle or if more and more drummers will be dragged into the scuffle until fifty musicians will be banging on drums on the Tonight show stage. Patrick Wilson of Weezer would make a good addition with his Frisbee skills.

Check out the initial duel between Ferrell and Smith to prepare yourself for what is to come.
