Liza Minnelli, the sixty-nine year old Oscar award-winning singer and actress, has once again been admitted to a treatment facility for substance abuse. Minnelli, who has been to rehab several times before, the most recent time being in 2004, was allegedly admitted to a Malibu facility under an undisclosed name several days ago. Scott Gorenstein, a representative of Minnelli, has stated that, “Liza Minnelli has valiantly battled substance abuse over the years and whenever she has needed to seek treatment she has done so.” He goes on to say that, “She is currently making excellent progress at an undisclosed facility.”
It is said that alcohol abuse played a major role in the ending of her fourth marriage. According to her then husband, David Gest, Minnelli, the daughter of the late actress and singer Judy Garland, allegedly would go on alcohol-induced rages and beat him. Minnelli’s substance abuse began after receiving a prescription for Valium shortly after her mother’s death, and continued on and off throughout the years.
Her use of recreational drugs was even subject of one of Andy Warhol’s diary entries in which he recalls her attending a party and asking the host to, “Give me every drug you’ve got.” In an interview in 2008, Minnelli, who often openly discussed her battle with substance abuse, said, “My whole life, this disease has been rampant. I inherited it, and it’s been horrendous, but I have always asked for help.”
Minnelli, whose career began at the age of three, appearing in the final scene of In the Good Old Summertime, has went on to earn two Golden Globes, an Oscar, two Tony awards, an Emmy, and a Grammy Legend award among others. Though she spent her teenage years performing in nightclubs and musical theatres, it wasn’t until her role in Cabaret that she struck international stardom. Since then she has been in over twenty films, including: Rent-a-Cop, Journey Back to Oz, and Unzipped.
She has also starred in several TV specials, Liza with a “Z”: A Concert for Television, being one of the most successful, and has had guest spots on many shows. Her most recent high profile event was a performance with Cher, Rosie O’Donnell, and Cyndi Lauper last May as she has had to temporarily stop performing due to a spinal injury she received while picking up her dogs. Minnelli had surgery to correct the problem in September, and seems to have recovered well, even making a surprise appearance at Cortés Alexander’s holiday show in December.
