Last night (April 11), Drake took the stage to close out the first weekend of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and he packed his set with a series of surprises. During his performance, the rapper turned out some of his newest material from his current album, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, but the biggest surprise was when he was joined onstage by fellow superstar Madonna. As the rapper broke into the debut performance of his single “Madonna,” the musician joined him onstage and performed a joint set that ended with a jaw-dropping surprise. Moments before walking offstage, Madonna went in for a kiss.
During their joint performance, Madonna appeared onstage wearing thigh high black boots and a shirt that read “big as Madonna,” lyrics from Drake’s “Madonna.” The duo worked their way through “Madonna” as well as Madonna’s “Human Nature” and “Hung Up.” The kiss came at the end of Madonna’s rendition of “Human Nature,” during which she came at the seated rapper from above for the sloppy kiss.
As Drake came up for air, he asked the audience “what the f*** just happened.” An eternally coy Madonna replied with “I’m Madonna, bitch” before exiting the stage with a swagger. Their performance marks the first time that Madonna has appeared onstage at Coachella since 2006. Although his Madonna make-out was the standout moment of his performance, Drake went on to close the show with gusto. The musician closed with a performance of “Legend,” but he also performed several other huge hits including his current Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne collaboration “Truffle Butter.”
Madonna and Drake’s Coachella make-out is not the first time that the musician has kissed another celebrity onstage. Madonna’s first and most prolific celebrity lip lock occurred when the controversial popstar engaged in an open mouthed kiss with Britney Spears during the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. The now iconic moment took place during a tribute performance to Madonna at the awards show. After kissing Spears, Madonna also kissed Christina Aguilera though the moment received less airtime as cameras were busy panning to Spears’ recent ex Justin Timberlake.
Coachella will continue with a second full weekend of shows between April 17 and 19. Other musicians who are set to take the stage at the music festival include Florence + the Machine, Marina and the Diamonds, Jack White, Clean Bandit, and AC/DC. The festival, which has been taking place since 1999, is attended by a multitude of fans including several famous faces. This year, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, the Jenner sisters, and Miley Cyrus were amongst the celebrities sited during the event.
