Slick Rick is known for his narrative rap style and verses, and he has been called hip-hop’s greatest storyteller. The rapper first gained success in the hip-hop industry after he joined the Get Fresh Crew. The crew was formed by the legendary Doug E. Fresh. At the time, Slick Rick went by the moniker MC Ricky D. Ricky D’s song “La Di Da Di” received mainstream attention in the mid-1980s. In 1988, Slick Rick went solo and released the album The Great Adventures of Slick Rick. The album reached the number one spot on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop charts. The solo effort featured the hit singles “Children’s Story,” “Hey Young World,”and “Teenage Love.””Children’s Story” is widely considered as one of the greatest hip-hop songs ever. The song has been covered by a number of rappers including Eminem, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and The Game. His single “La Di Da Di” was covered by Snoop Dogg on his “Lodi Dodi” song.
In 2008, Slick Rick was recognized on VH1’s Hip Hop Honors show. Ghostface Killah and Biz Markie performed “La Di Da Di,” and Fabolous and Dana Dane performed “Hey Young World.” Last year, Slick Rick celebrated the 25th anniversary of his album The Great Adventures of Slick Rick by going on tour. Currently, Slick Rick is heading back on the road in February. Some of the rapper’s shows will feature appearances from Rakim, Dru Hill, Keith Sweat, Ginuwine, Tank, and SWV. Slick Rick’s first tour stop will be in Washington, DC at The Howard Theatre on February 6th.
