Well it’s about time isn’t it? While Liam Gallagher and Beady Eye have been touring their rather below-average second album, BE, older brother Noel has been in the recording studio recording his follow up to his 2011 self-titled debut. Chasing Yesterday was released in March 2015 and was accompanied with a world tour. He’s promised us an appearance from The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr on the record and says that this is most eclectic album yet. But wait, there’s more! Noel has also given us a snippet of what we can expect from his sophomore High Flying Birds album in the form of “In The Heat Of The Moment.”
Straight away, the track gets right in your face with the lyrics “Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah.” The track oozes attitude and swagger. Couple this with church bells, brilliant lyrics, and stellar vocals, and you’ve got a track that you could mistake as an actual Oasis song. The production and varied instrumentation on this track is outstanding. From the synth that plays underneath the unbelievably catchy chorus to the rich beats of the drums, this song was made for huge stadiums full of intoxicated 45-year-olds trying to relive their years during the Britpop era.
So by the sounds of things, I don’t have anything to complain about. Well, that’s where you’re wrong. As I said earlier in the review, you could mistake this for an Oasis song, and that is also its downfall. Noel now has the opportunity to explore new sounds without any consequences or backlash. He’s reached a point in his career where he could create a Neo-Psychedelic Acid House album and could get away with because he’s Noel Gallagher (though I’m not suggesting he should make a Neo-Psychedelic Acid House album…).
Overall, “In The Heat Of The Moment” is an brilliant track and I’m looking forward to what the rest of the album, hopefully it is not like an Oasis tribute album. Who am I kidding, of course it’ll be good.
