Paris, one of the greatest cities in the world. Everyone knows about it, and we already brought you part one of this list to tell you some lesser known facts. Here is part two.
Number Eight: ‘Le Chabanais’
This was a brothel in Paris that was frequently visited by King Edward VII. It is rumored that he enjoyed filling up a bathtub with champagne and prostitutes. Salvador Dali ended up buying this very bathtub years later in 1951.
Number Seven: Hitler Almost Destroyed Paris
On the eve of the allied liberation in 1944, he gave orders that this great place be wiped off the map. Thankfully, the Nazi general in charge of this mission ignored the order on purpose.
Number Six: There Are Kangaroos Nearby
When you think of France, kangaroos are not immediately called to mind. There is a place, however, only about an hour outside of Paris where there is a kangaroo population. Apparently this is the result of an escape from an animal park back in the ’70s.
Number Five: The French Statue of Liberty
Yes, the French have one too. Their version is deliberately placed to face the Statue of Liberty in the United States and is intended to symbolize the friendship between the two nations.
Number Four: The Army Parade
The Allied army gave themselves a parade in Paris in 1945 after the liberation. This was because, otherwise, it would have been impossible to make it through the celebrations already going on to continue fighting the Germans.
Number Three: The Underground Cinemas
There is a group in the city that breaks into important places in order to fix them up. They also have movie theaters underground and put on artistic events for citizens lucky enough to know about them.
Number Two: The Lost Doorkeeper
A hospital employee working as a doorkeeper got lost in the Paris Catacombs in 1793. It’s unclear exactly why he was in there, and his body was not found until 11 years later.
Number One: Muslim Identity Certificates
The Great Mosque of Paris hid Jews during the second world war and gave them identity certificates so they could pass off as Muslims and avoid persecution. We hope you enjoyed part two of our list!
