Retro: Top 10 ’60s Fashion Trends (Part 1)

The fashion of the 1960s might look ridiculous right now, but at one time, it was all the rage. Here, we present our list of the top 10 ’60s fashion trends that remain elegant – even today. Check out part one of our list below, and stay tuned for part two, coming soon!

Number Ten: Miniskirts. Miniskirts might not be anything to notice today, but in the 1960s, miniskirts were a daring way for women to show off their legs and feel powerful at the same time. In the 1960s, a “mini” skirt was anything with a hemline above the knee, and it was invented by Mary Quant.

Number Nine: Military-Style Dresses. Many women began wearing dresses that matched patterns worn by the Royal Military Men’s uniforms in the 1960s. The dresses often featured oversized gold buttons, high collars, and were in royal colors such as purple, blue, and red. The trend allowed women to feel feminine in a dress while also feeling masculine (the Military influence).

Number Eight: Pearl Necklaces. Popularized by Jackie Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn, pearl necklaces were the ultimate sign of class and glamor in the 1960s. Pearl necklaces made women of the time feel elegant and trendy, especially since so many women followed the styles of Kennedy and Hepburn.

Number Seven: Polka Dot Dresses. Dresses covered in polka dots became very popular in the 1960s as a way for women to look both classy and fun. Most of these dresses were cinched at the waist and then flared out and ended at the knee or just above the knee. Many women would accessorize these dresses with platform shoes.

Number Six: The Little Black Dress. It’s true – the LBD was popularized in the 1960s! Perhaps the most famous LBD can be seen on Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The dress Hepburn wears in the film was designed by Givenchy, and even women today continue to emulate her look. A little black dress was the perfect way for women of the ’60s to look elegant without looking like they had put hours into their appearance.
