Yesterday the world mourned the loss of legendary R&B and Soul performer Percy Sledge when it was announced that the musician passed away in his home at the age of 74. The musician, most well renowned for his single, “When a Man Loves a Woman,” succumbed to a battle with liver cancer from a 2014 diagnosis. Since his death, a large number of musicians have taken to social media to offer a fitting tribute to the deceased singer. Chief amongst those musicians was Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist expressed his appreciation for Sledge, tweeting out a simple message regarding the artist in an effort to honor his legacy. “I love Percy Sledge,” the musician stated. Since the news of Sledge’s death has spread, other artists have shared a similar tribute on their accounts. Lily Allen provided Sledge with one final round of applause, while Wu-Tang Clan honored the legacy of “When a Man Loves a Woman” alongside his many years of life. Other artists who shared a similar message include Candi Staton, Billy Bragg, and Theo Hutchcraft.
Another song that musicians recognized was Sledge’s cover of “Dark End of the Street,” which was included on his 1967 The Percy Sledge Way. Although originally performed by James Carr, Sledge’s cover has been recognized in recent years. More than musicians have honored Sledge’s memory as well.
Steve Green of Artists International Management Inc. released a statement of his own. Sledge was one of the agent’s first acts, and as such he has a special respect for him. “He was one of my first acts, he was a terrific person and you don’t find that in this business very often. He was truly a standout.”
Sledge’s lecacy has been honored in the years leading up to his death. In 2005, the musician was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and he has received a series of accolades for his work as a musician. Sledge has also been inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame as well as the Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame, the Delta Music Museum, and his home state Alabama’s Alabama Music Hall of Fame. Over his career, the artist has released nine studio albums and has left a lasting impact on the music world.
