Shameless has just been renewed for a seventh season that will be released in 2017. Now that season six is being aired on Showtime, it’s a great time to go through some little-known facts about the show. Stay tuned for part two, coming soon!
Number Fifteen: The Patsy’s Pies Really Exists
The diner where Fiona works during some of the series actually exists in Chicago, though under a different name. The real place is located at Lincoln Avenue and it’s called Patsy’s Pub & Grill.
Number Fourteen: Emmy Rossum Loves Her Character’s Careless Look
The actress has confessed to relating to her character, Fiona, because she also tends to take care of everyone around her. In addition, she mentioned that she loves not having to be “all glam” on the show, which also saves the team a lot of time on hair and makeup.
Number Thirteen: Mandy and Lip Are an Off-Screen Couple
Mandy Milkovich and Lip Gallagher, who play boyfriend and girlfriend on the show, are a real life couple as well. The two of them (Emma Greenwell and Jeremy Allen) started dating in 2011 when Greenwell joined the cast as Jane Levy’s replacement.
Number Twelve: Producers Wanted the Gallaghers to Feel Familiar
The Gallaghers are a messy, dysfunctional family with economic issues. Instead of setting the story in a trailer park in the south of the country, they chose in a regular wooden house in Chicago: “It’s not My Name Is Earl or Roseanne. It’s got a much graver level of poverty attached to it. It’s not blue collar; it’s no collar.” Their goal was for the viewer to feel like the Gallaghers could be their next-door neighbors.
Number Eleven: A Famous Pool
The swimming pool in which Fiona and Steve go skinny dipping in episode 7 of the first season is the same one used in Cruel Intentions. The pool is located in the Millenium Biltmore Hotel, in Los Angeles.
Number Ten: No Scripts Allowed
Most actors read and rehearse their scripts before and during takes while filming, but this is not allowed on set for the Shameless cast. The actors are required to know all of their lines by heart.
Number Nine: Fiona Was Supposed to Look Different
The first few drafts of the pilot episode described Fiona as an average-looking overweight blonde girl. They ended up casting slender, dark-haired Emmy Rossum instead.
Number Eight: Fiona Barely Appears in Shameless U.K.
Emmy Rossum takes most of the lines and screen time in U.S.’ Shameless, but her British counterpart in the original production only appears in 19 episodes out of all 138. In fact, her character gets sent to prison. Stay tuned for part two with seven more fun facts about the show, coming soon!
