Fifteen years ago, Sheriff Jim Johnson was serving the military overseas in Iraq. He joined the Wisconsin Army National Guard and was stationed over in Baghdad. It was a hard time and it was also obviously a lonely time as well.

19. A Little Happiness

It was tough being stationed so far away from his friends and family during a war. Still, Johnson felt a sense of pride that he could help serve his country. Although it was rough there was something that managed to bring a smile to his face…

18. Letters

Back in 2003, Johnson also received a ton of letters while he was overseas. It seems that the soldiers would often receive letters from young kids in the States. “We received these letters from these young kids. I held on to all of them,” Johnson said.

17. Better Days

It was these letters that helped Johnson get through his service with the thought of better days approaching. He made sure to keep each and every letter that was sent to him and he greatly treasured them. When he finally made it back home he put them away for safe keeping.

16. Years Later

Years passed since Johnson’s service and the letters that he had kept were put away for safe keeping. However, one day almost 15 years later, Johnson began to go through a spring cleaning in his home. That was when he came across the box with all of the letters in it.

15. Looking Through

Johnson immediately found himself going through all of the old letters and rereading the sweet messages that he had received during his military service. Then one letter in particular really stood out to him and he had to read it a few times before he realized why. But what did the letter say?

14. The Letter

The letter said: “Dear soldiers. Thank you for what you all do and are doing for our country. Best wishes and have a Merry Christmas. From Chris Uselding.” Sheriff Johnson looked at the letter over and over trying to figure out what it was that stood out to him. Then it finally hit him!

13. Fourth Grader

At the time, the letter was written by Chris Uselding, a fourth-grade student from Cedar Grove-Belgium Elementary School. The name sounded incredibly family to Sheriff Johnson and he couldn’t figure out why. That’s when he realized that it was the name of one of his deputy sheriffs in the jail division.

12. One Of His Guys

It was at that moment that Sheriff Johnson realized that the Chris in the letter was the same one that he had personally hired three years ago. He couldn’t believe the way that life had turned out. Sheriff Johnson knew at that moment what he had to do…

11. Bringing The Letter

The next day, Sheriff Johnson decided to bring the letter with him to work. However, he didn’t want to just show the letter to Chris and be done with it. Instead, he had another great idea…

10. Hanging It Up

Sheriff Johnson decided that he would take the letter into the office and have it framed. Then he hung the letter up in the roll call room of the jail division. That’s when one of the other deputies noticed that the letter was signed by Chris Uselding.

9. Incredibly Confused

The deputies that saw the letter hanging up immediately brought it to Uselding’s attention. Uselding was obviously incredibly confused about why a letter that he wrote in the 4th grade was hanging up in the office. He began to wonder if it was a prank.

8. A Joke

I was kind of shocked that something like that would be there,” he said. “I thought it was some kind of joke, I was thinking I sent it here because it ended up in the sheriff’s office.” That’s when Johnson stepped out of the office and asked Uselding a question.

7. The Question

Johnson came out of the office and immediately asked Uselding about the letter. Uselding explained that he couldn’t recall much about the letter. He explained that it was a part of a class project around Christmastime and that he didn’t know where the letters were being sent or to whom.

6. Crazy Coincidence

Image: YouTube/Inside Edition

That’s when Sheriff Johnson revealed the insane truth to Uselding!“No, you sent it to a soldier in Baghdad, Iraq,” Johnson said. Uselding replied, saying, “I was kind of stunned (at) that, I don’t remember it at all so I was kind of stunned thinking back.”

5. Unbelievable

My jaw hit the floor,” Uselding said. “It’s crazy to think about that this letter touched Sheriff Johnson and he was able to share that with me and keep it for all these years.” Uselding also had no idea what a great impact the letter would have on Johnson.

4. Truly Impactful

The letters managed to make a huge impact on Sheriff Johnson while he was deployed in Baghdad for 14 months. According to jsonline.com, “After serving in the Marine Corps in the 1980s, Johnson joined the Wisconsin Army National Guard’s 32nd Military Police Company in 1999 and served for nine years.”

3. Support System

It’s nice to get letters from young people,” he said. “It makes you realize the level of support people have for the soldiers.” This is why Johnson held onto the letters for so long.

2. Small World

This odd coincidence made both men realize just what a small world they live in. “It makes you realize how small the world is. It truly does,” Johnson said. The two men still can’t believe how this all played out!
