Top 10 ’70s Fashion Trends (Part 1)

It’s no secret that fashion is cyclic, so you knew it would only be a matter of time before the fashion of the 1970s made a comeback. Well, these top 10 ’70s fashion trends are making a comeback in a big way. Check out part one of our list of the top 10 ’70s fashion trends below, and stay tuned for part two, coming soon!

Number Ten: Platform Shoes. Platform shoes were one of the most popular styles in the disco era, and they have since made quite the comeback! Whether paired with bell bottoms or a cute dress, platform shoes gave people a longer, leaner look at the cost of looking like an awkward horse while walking. Most platform shoes of the time were made of wood, cork, or plastic.

Number Nine: Jumpsuits. It’s an adult onesie! Jumpsuits were a high fashion item in the ’70s for women who wanted to look glamorous without putting too much effort into it. The jumpsuits of ’70s lore were often made of silk or another shiny material, although some were made of denim or more subdued materials.

Number Eight: Tie-Dye Everything. Chances are, if you grew up in the ’70s then you probably owned some tie-dye items. Even kids who grew up in the ’90s fell victim to this multi-colored trend. Tie-dying became popularized by DIY-heavy hippies, and thanks to the endorsement of Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, tie-dyeing became a mainstream phenomenon.

Number Seven: Floppy Hats. Though you might think of big hats as an accessory for the Kentucky Derby, they were much, much more in the ’70s. Many women would match their hats to the rest of their clothing to make a look more complete. Floppy hats often featured bows, flowers, and other accoutrements on them.

Number Six: Wrap Dresses. Wrap dresses were popularized by Diane Von Furstenberg, and they became one of the best ways for women to be both stylish and comfortable. The wrap dress flatters all body types and is extremely versatile as well. No wonder they’re making a comeback! Stay tuned for part two of our list of the top 10 ’70s fashion trends, coming soon!
