Top 10 Violent Prisons on Earth (Part 1)

It’s no secret that prison is not a fun place to be. However, you really, really do not want to end up in one of these 10 most violent prisons in the world. Here, we present our list of the top 10 violent prisons on earth. Check out part one below, and stay tuned for part two, coming soon!

Number Ten: San Juan de Lurigancho Prison. Located in Lima, Peru, San Juan de Lurigancho prison is widely considered to be the toughest and most violent prison in all of South America. The prison was built to hold just 2,500 inmates; however, there are usually around 7,000 inmates in the prison at any given time. On top of that, the guards do not maintain a strict environment, so inmates can get away with all sorts of crimes, including drug dealing, rape, and murder.

Number Nine: San Quentin Prison. San Quentin Prison, located in California, is California’s oldest state prison. The prison opened more than 150 years ago and is the United States’ largest facility that is designed to hold male inmates waiting to be executed. Though a gas chamber still exists in the prison, all inmates have been put to death by lethal injection since 1996. The prison’s population is around 4,000 inmates.

Number Eight: Stanley Prison. Located in Hong Kong, Stanley Prison was built in 1937 and is a maximum security facility. Since the prison opened, more than 600 prisoners have been put to death thanks to the death penalty. The population of the prison is approximately 3,000 prisoners.

Number Seven: Bang Kwang Prison. Located just a few miles outside of Bangkok, Thailand, Bang Kwang prison is one of the world’s most violent and brutal prisoners. Every single prisoner must wear shackles in their first three months at Bang Kwang, and prisoners who have been sentenced to death must wear iron shackles that have been welded to their legs. All prisoners in Bang Kwang are serving a sentence of at least 25 years, which is a long time to deal without running water and unimaginably poor plumbing.

Number Six: La Sabaneta Prison. Located in Venezuela, La Sabeneta is underfunded and horribly understaffed as well. The guards have little power, and the prison is run primarily by gangs, who are able to get away with riots and murders on a relatively regular basis. Stay tuned for part two of our list of the top 10 violent prisons on earth, coming soon!
